November's been and gone

Another month that's flown by.. I can't believe we'll be into Christmas soon!  Here are the highs and lows of the month for us:

  • Spending time in our son's school and seeing him with his classmates.
  • A new bike... Santa's bringing a lovely new bike :-)
  • Baby girl finally, finally, sitting up for minutes at a time

Not sitting up!
  • Seeing our son try, fail, try again and succeeding at go-karting. Hooray!
  • Thinking about marketing with a friend at Bicester outlet village. My brain still works!
  • A girl's weekend, while the boys were visting grandparents
  • My first competition on the blog; the response has been great so far
  • Still walking the school run everyday.  We're not even tempted by the car so far

November's been a great month for us.. how about you?  I'd love to hear what you've been up to.

Late to the slow blogger party

Not for the first time, I'm late to a party.  This time it's the slow blogging party.  What's that?

[Slow blogging] is based on the very simple idea that blogging is better for everyone involved if we all just take a deep breath, pause, and give ourselves time and space to be creative. Tots 100

Since I joined the blogging movement, I have felt the pace.  It's relentless.  Sometimes it seems everyone wants to review everything, be the latest linky, start the latest hashtag.  I get daily emails from blogs with new entries every day.  Sometimes two or three entries.  I'm not criticising - if it works for them, then great.

But I'm a competitive soul.  I check Tots 100.  I feel the pressure to update this blog regularly.  I want to 'keep up'.

But why?

I started this blog to record our family life.  For my kids to have a record of the things we do.  It's a place to reflect and share things we love.  And while it's lovely to have readers and followers, and link up every now and again, this is a hobby.  Not just any old hobby.  My hobby.  Something to enjoy, savour, and think about.

Hobbies don't have to be competitions.  Sometimes the winner is the happiest person at the back, not the one with the most badges.  So calm down competitive streak.  While I might not have the busiest blog in the blogosphere, it's mine.  And I like it.  So there.

So I officially declare this a slow blog.  It seems fitting that the Tots 100 slow blog badge started in April and I'm only now linking to it.  I guess that's the point.

Chicco You and Me baby carrier review

For the last few months, baby girl and I have been using the Chicco You and Me baby carrier.  We were lucky enough to receive this as part of the Chicco Tested for Happiness campaign.

We both love baby wearing and have found this carrier to be comfortable for both of us.  It's easy to use too.  I particularly find the back support in this carrier excellent - now baby girl's eight months old and getting heavier I can still comfortably carry her for an hour or two.

Baby girl loves the padding in the front compartment which means she's really comfortable.  She gets a great view on the world too!

It's another brilliant value, good quality product from Chicco that we always reach for first.

You can see our full review of the You and Me carrier on the Chicco Tested for Happiness site.  I'd love to know what you think.

Delicious slow cooker chickpea and spinach curry

I love curry and we eat it regularly.  I used to make curry the long way and with a few pans, until I tried it in our slow cooker - I've never looked back!

This recipe is delicious and full of flavour.  It's so easy to make too.  I always make this vegetarian version, but you could add chicken to the mix too if you have some going.  I use my standard sized slow cooker for this recipe.

Simple and delicious slow cooker chickpea and spinach curry

Serves 2-4

Ingredients
  • One large onion, sliced (I always use frozen)
  • Two tins of chickpeas
  • One tin of coconut milk (I use low fat)
  • Four tablespoons of Patak's Tikka Masala curry paste
  • 225g bag of fresh spinach

Put everything apart from the spinach in the slow cooker.  Give it a good mix.

Cook on low for 6-8 hours, or high for 3-4 hours, stirring every now and then.

About 20 mins before serving, mash the chickpeas slightly if you'd like a thicker curry (this is not essential), and stir through the spinach.  Put lid on and leave for 15-20 minutes until the spinach has wilted.

Serve with rice and naan bread.

It really is that simple, and it tastes delicious.  I'd love to know if you make it; please leave a comment.

Linking up with A Mummy Too for this recipe.

October's been and gone

October's been and gone in a flash... here's what I loved about the month.
  • Happy fifth birthday to our son.  Two parties and school sweets!
  • Birthday Caterham Cars 'cakerham' - I have no idea how I made this!

  • Seeing our son learn to read and write in just a few short weeks :-)
  • Our first school harvest festival - I shed a quiet proud tear at the back
  • Getting out and about at Coombe Park in Coventry. Read my blog post.
  • Catching up with work and engaging my brain for a while
  • Baby girl sitting up in a wobbly, unstable way, but definitely sitting up!
  • Half term swimming with our son and daughter
  • Baby girl's first tooth, bottom left
  • Seeing our son go splat in a big puddle after falling off his scooter.  He wasn't hurt at all - just drenched!

I'd love to hear what your highlights of last month were.. don't be a stranger and leave a comment :-)

Silent Sunday
